Food & Hydration:
During their puppy years, Yorkies should be fed two times a day. When they reach adulthood (typically between 1-2 years), they should be switched to one meal per day. It is important to offer your Yorkie with high-quality dog food that includes all essential nutrients and vitamins.
Generally, they should drink 1 ounce of water per pound of weight every day (roughly 8 ounces for a small, 6-pound dog). To ensure that your Yorkie is drinking enough, you can offer fresh water at least twice daily and give them access to water at all times. You can also opt for wet food instead of dry kibble to increase their overall liquid intake.
Exercise:
Yorkies are a small breed so they don’t need huge amounts of exercise. A good rule of thumb is to spend at least 20 minutes per day engaging in physical activities like going on walks, playing fetch, or taking part in agility training classes. Also, make sure that your Yorkie spends enough time outside so that he/she can get plenty of fresh air and sunshine!
When it comes to activities that Yorkies enjoy the most, popular ones include playing with toys such as balls or frisbees, running up and down the stairs, playing hide-and-seek, or simply just lying down and enjoying the sun! Whatever the activity, make sure to spend quality time with him/her and keep these activities interesting.
Grooming:
Yorkies are rather high-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Not only do these little pooches require regular brushing, but they also need frequent baths as well. Yorkies have a medium-length double coat made of soft, silky fur that requires plenty of care and attention to stay looking its best.
Bathing your Yorkie once every 2-3 weeks is recommended to avoid skin irritation and dryness. When bathing them, use a gentle shampoo designed for dogs, and make sure to rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. After the bath is finished, brush through the fur one more time before them drying off completely with a towel or hairdryer set on low heat. Grooming your Yorkie correctly not only keeps its coat looking clean and healthy but also prevents matting and tangles.
